Monday Meeting

Phew. Monday again. This week I am gearing up for NaNoWriMo, and finishing brainstorming and outlining for the November novel. I think this will be good, as I continue to hash out my revisions on my Star novel. I didn't do a ton of writing last week, but I did a ton of thinking. Which also means that my house got cleaner. Last week I also put together a soundtrack for my new NaNoWriMo novel, so I'm ready. Clarification (for anyone coming to the party late, and welcome, if you are): I write to a soundtrack--a line-up of songs which mimics the emotional journey of my characters. I find it a wonderful tool for immediately putting me inside my novel--an essential thing since I am writing in snatches of stolen time.

So, this week, I'm just going to plug ahead, and work on whatever moves me. I want my revisions on the Star novel to be completed by the end of the year, but I have some thinking to do because I know it lacks something. Luckily, I know what it lacks--I just have to figure out exactly how I want to put it in. When I am in a creative quandry, I get intellectual. And create charts and graphs and outlines. I'll show you mine if you show me yours.

How about you? Anyone participating in NaNoWriMo? Mardi Gras for writers (I've never done it--I'm just hoping). What are your goals for the week?

  1. I did NaNo once. Not in a place writing-wise to do it this year, but I am tempted to try again another time.

I learned a lot about me, my writing process, my writing pitfalls doing it. It's funny how my book started out with one MC and switched to a different one halfway through. Talk about POV shifts. But it's a great way to write and shut off the inner editor at the same time. Quantity is what counts, not quality.

I've actually gotten some serious writing done this past week. Started marrying my poetry with some prose and sticking it in chapter form. Not sure how that will turn out as it seems episodic right now.

And, of course, I'm still working on improving Garlic. And I'm learning so much from this particular process.

  2. Goals for the week: Do the final editing on a novel as soon as my agent sends it to me so she can submit it.

Finish the rewrite on a WIP and send it to a critique partner.

I have had a couple of NaNo-like experiences, cranking out first drafts in several weeks, I loved it. I wish you much luck and discovery with NaNo.

  4. Sarah--Getting serious writing done sounds great. Making something less episodic is something I'm working on as well. Good luck! It sounds like you're pretty energized with the writing right now.

  5. Paul-- I like how you are getting to the end of things-- final editing, finish the rewrite. I wish you great writing as you finish.

And, thanks for the good wishes for my NaNo.

  6. My goal for the week is to figure out what I'm writing for NaNo. I'm running out of time!

  7. Isn't that the whole point of NaNo? To be suspended in the feeling that you are running out of time, even before you begin? It sounds like you are right on track!
