Don't Piss Off the Universe

I think that all my advice can be boiled down to that one sentence.

Let's say it together.

Don't piss off the Universe.

The Universe is like my 7-and-11/12ths-year old daughter, Cowgirl.

The Universe loves kittens, as well as other things.

It expects you to read its mind and know just what to do.

It rewards you with the greatest stuff when you are completely open and hold nothing back.

It reacts best to kindness.

And, girl, oh girl, does it hold a grudge.

Don't Piss Off the Universe.

I've been thinking a lot about my brand as a writer and about who I am in the writing world. I try to be someone who treats others like we are all in this together. Because WE ARE.

On my good days, I want to be completely open to the Universe. Not in some incense-burning, kumbayah-singing perfection-wielding way, but in a confident, I've-done-the-hard-work, I'm-helping-my-fellow-writer, let's-get-to-the-next-weigh-station-together way.

On my bad days, I just strive to not piss off the Universe.

The karma version of Do No Harm.

I just came back from the James River Writers Conference, and girl, oh girl, those folks certainly know how to make you feel like you're in it together, y'all. I get buoyed up for months by the sense of camaraderie I feel there. *waving to Erica and Donna (eh?) and Jon and Joe and Lisa and Vernon and Katrina, and well, everyone!*

And I am so thankful to have welcomed in the 40th member of the Writers' Loft in Sherborn--you guys rock, and never, ever piss off the universe. Thanks for making my risk this year anything but!

So, do you feel open to the opportunities in front of you? What happened the last time you pissed off the Universe?  Have any good news to share?

  1. There is nothing wrong with burning incense (especially after a heaping pile of chia seeds).

But seriously, I am so thankful for the writers' loft. You brought it to life at the exact time my writing needed something exactly like the writers' loft. And I know many others feel the same.

And I piss off the universe constantly. Most recently was with an entire bag of candy corn (brach's, the kind with the pumpkins mixed in). But it was worth it. [I couldn't stay serious for too long]

  2. My kids were discussing candy corn and candy pumpkins in the car... and they totally think they made up the concept of mixing to the two! I must get them a bag (that is after I polish off this ginormous bag of candy corn).
Totally on the bandwagon for not pissing off the universe. ;)

  3. Papa-J--:) You brought the Loft something it needed at the exact right time too--so it was a great exchange--which I think the Universe demands. Barter. :) Love candy corn. Can't wait to pilfer the candy bags. That probably angers the Universe too.

Ansha--I think I might prefer straight-up candy corn. Maybe we'll have to have a taste test. Maybe at the kidlit meetup at the Loft. :) Can't wait to see you!

  4. I tried this new one that was all big things like the pumpkin, but said 'made from honey' on it. all the shapes tasted different - like the brown bats had a hint of chocolate, the honey pots tasted ... honeyish, something definitely tasted maple-ish, and yellow moons tasted like circus peanuts (i don't know - is that what the moon tastes like?).

after extensive testing, i prefer the the original corn/pumpkin combo.

  5. I just try to remember to show up on Tuesdays. Did you recall I left my yoga mat there? That way the neither the universe nor I will be frustrated with me for forgetting it.

  6. This post made me paranoid that I'd somehow pissed off the universe and that this was your odd way of letting me know. Wait. Is this your odd way of letting me know???

  7. PapaJ--I don't think I've ever even had the pumpkin ones. :)

Kristen--Your yoga mat has several yoga mat friends at the Loft--evidently that is an item nobody wants to forget come Tuesday!

Anna-LOL Friends tell friends when they piss off the universe. :) I'd let you know.
